SmartView 4K features an incredibly strong machined aluminum metal design with crisp clean lines. The design is anodized in deep black, so it looks fantastic mounted in equipment racks with other Blackmagic Design equipment! Plus SmartView 4K is only a few inches deep. Because monitors are often installed at the top of equipment racks, this thin design allows a large area behind the monitor to better ventilate the whole rack and keep all the equipment cool. Along the bottom of the SmartView 4K is a range of button controls that are tilted slightly so they're easier to press. On the rear of the monitor are all the video connections, plus there's even a VESA mounting point!
The LCD used on SmartView 4K features an extremely high resolution so it will display every pixel in an Ultra HD image. That means you get an incredibly clean image with deep color fidelity. To avoid messy fingerprints on the LCD screen, SmartView 4K has a row of buttons along the bottom of the screen so you can adjust all the monitor controls without touching the screen. SmartView 4K is designed for broadcast so it will instantly lock to a new video source, which is very common when the monitor is connected to a router and the input can change constantly to different timed sources. Unlike TVs, the video is not over scanned so you get all image pixels right to the edge of the LCD.
The SmartView 4K front panel includes a wide range of monitoring controls! The input button selects between the two 12G-SDI video inputs and the 2110 IP video input. The display button allows you to adjust display brightness. The H/V display is a traditional broadcast monitor function that lets you look into the image blanking. Blue only is great for checking hue from SD archive content. The zoom button lets you zoom the image in for adjusting camera focus. Peaking highlights sharp image detail and is also perfect for adjusting camera focus. The 3D LUT buttons let you enable and switch between 3D LUTs. The H and V marker buttons let you display and adjust up to 4 on screen markers.
When you're working with cameras, SmartView 4K has everything you need to assist in framing and focus with its on screen graphic overlays. Overlays include safe area and safe title markers. Plus there are 4 separate frame guides, 2 vertical and 2 horizontal, which can be displayed simultaneously and are perfect for social media and feature film framing. The markers are all individually adjustable so you can create any aspect ratio you like! You also get on screen focus peaking, which can be turned on and off with a dedicated front panel button. Focus peaking is perfect when using SmartView 4K for remote camera monitoring, as you can ensure your remote camera has perfect focus at all times!
Broadcasters and feature film productions often work with SDI sources that are encoded with log film gamma or an HDR profile. This means the images can look washed out or have incorrect colors. SmartView 4K solves this problem because it includes support for 3D LUTs! This means you can use a 3D LUT to re-map the SDI or 2110 input colorspace to the SmartView 4K screen. Plus you could also use 3D LUTs for exciting creative looks! 3D LUTs are easy to use and are uploaded using the SmartView utility. You can also export DaVinci Resolve color grades as custom 3D LUTs. Because DaVinci Resolve can be downloaded free, it costs absolutely nothing to start creating a library of exciting 3D LUTs!

Now you can build modern IP video systems because SmartView 4K fully conforms to the SMPTE‑2110 standard for IP video with both optical fiber and copper 10G Ethernet connections. SMPTE‑2110 specifies the transport, synchronization and description of video, audio and ancillary data over IP networks for broadcast. This includes support for SMPTE‑2110-20 uncompressed video, the Blackmagic IP codec for high frame rate Ultra HD as well as SMPTE‑2110-21 traffic shaping/timing, SMPTE‑2110-30 audio and SMPTE‑2110-40 support for ancillary data. Plus the selected video input can be sent out via the 10G Ethernet SMPTE‑2110 IP connection with full support for multicast out to multiple destinations.
SmartView 4K supports the NMOS interface specifications so all your 2110 IP video devices can operate together as a large virtual router. Plus Videohub Smart Control can route sources to destinations on 2110 IP networks because it can act as an NMOS controller. The NMOS interface specification describes how SMPTE 2110 devices are discovered and controlled on IP networks. SmartView 4K supports IS-04 for discovery and registration of IP video devices and IS-05 for connection management between IP video devices. This means you can make connections between sources and destinations just like a traditional SDI router!
When you’re working with live production, SmartView 4K supports the Blackmagic SDI Tally Protocol and illuminates a colored border around the image, in red for on air or green for preview. This SDI tally standard is used on all ATEM live production switchers so you can simply connect the monitor to the switcher SDI outputs to get the image and the tally with a single BNC cable. This means that a director can cut between cameras and the tally information will be sent back to the SmartView 4K via the SDI video feed. This totally eliminates complex cabling and the Blackmagic SDI Tally Protocol helps you set up for jobs much faster.
When you need to change settings or update the software on your SmartView 4K, then you can simply download and run the SmartView Utility software which is available free of charge on the Blackmagic Design support site. This software is available for both Mac and Windows computers and it connects via the USB connection or Ethernet when you have the SmartView 4K Ethernet connected. You can use the utility to change the monitor custom name for identifying monitors in larger systems. You can also select between 3G-SDI level A and level B formatting. To protect against unauthorized network access, Ethernet is disabled by default, but can be enabled when connecting via USB.
Videohub includes a powerful remote control protocol so you can create custom remote control solutions for integrating SmartView 4K into your broadcast systems. It's extremely easy to learn because it's a simple text based protocol you can even play with using a Telnet client. This means you can create custom control solutions on all computer platforms and from embedded hardware such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino. You get full control of LCD brightness, contrast, saturation, tally, input selection and you can even activate a 3D LUT. The best way to learn the protocol is to log in using a simple Telnet app and then use the documentation in the SmartView 4K manual to try out each command.
